Pitt innovators were issued 11 U.S. patents in June 2024.
Featured patent: 12,016,892: “Bacteriophages for Treatment of Tuberculosis”
Tuberculosis kills more than 1.5 million people each year. Current treatment is a strict six-month antibiotic regimen with a minimum of three different drugs, making compliance difficult. Pitt innovators led by Graham Hatfull, Eberly Family Professor of Biotechnology, have developed bacteriophages, viruses that replicate within bacteria, that could be delivered as a cocktail together with standard antibiotic treatment, to potentially reduce treatment time and reduce the incidence of antibiotic resistance.
Dr. Hatfull was recently elected to the National Academy of Sciences in recognition of his pioneering research on bacteriophages. His lifesaving work has been featured by CNN International and USA Today.
